National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying

On Friday 20th of March, St Andrews College celebrated the National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying.  This day provides a focus for all schools to say Bullying. No Way! It is also a day to strengthen the existing everyday messages that bullying and violence at school are not okay at anytime.

Throughout the week there were many posters put up around the school and facts and information about bullying read out each morning in the notices. Approximately 1 in 4 Australian students reported being bullied every few weeks, with hurtful teasing being the most common form of bullying behaviours experienced by students followed by having hurtful lies told about them.

Bullying is when one person (or a group of people) with more power than someone else, tries to upset or hurt them. This power can come from being more popular, stronger or part of the group. They might repeatedly try to hurt them physically, try to socially isolate them or say and do mean or humiliating things to them. Bullying can happen anywhere, at school, at home, at work, in online social spaces, via text messaging or via email. Bullying is also being a bystander and knowing that bullying is occurring but not doing anything about it.

Bullying is not ok. It feels awful. You feel like you can’t stop it. You have the right to feel safe. Here at St Andrews College we have zero tolerance for bullying and violence. It is days like today; the National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying, that we can say No Way to bullying and show that we; as a community, will stand together and stand against bullying and violence.

A big thankyou to all members of the Vinnies Group who sold
Bullying. No Way! wrist bands on the day to raise money for Project Compassion and to promote awareness of the importance of taking a stand against bullying and violence.
