| Congratulations to all the winners of the Executive Director's Summer Reading Challenge |
Thank you for your support of the 2016 Executive Director's Summer Reading Challenge. The results were terrific with 3582 texts read by 796 students.
This popular annual competition promotes literacy among students across the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta over the Summer holidays. It’s a great way to make sure that learning continues during the school break!
Every entrant received a certificate of participation. However, a handful of lucky students were selected at random as the winners of four iPad Mini. These students have received the prizes, personally delivered by Executive Director of Schools Greg Whitby.

Chelsea Peter (St John’s Primary, Riverstone) won an iPad Mini by reading ‘Billie B Brown: The Bad Butterfly’ by Sally Rippin, one of the most popular authors in the challenge. ‘I loved how when Billie and Jack went to dance class they got to dance like butterflies and trolls,’ said Chelsea.

Dominique De Guzman (St John Vianney’s Primary, Doonside) had a winning entry in Anna Fienberg and Barbara Fienberg’s book, ‘Tashi: Lost in the City’. ‘I like this book because it is very interesting. I like Tashi because he is clever and he knows how to stay calm. I liked the part where he rescued himself and a small boy from being sold to work in the salt mines,’ Dominique said.

Michael Milazzo (St Andrew’s College, Marayong) won his prize by reading ‘Wolf Brother: Chronicles of Darkness’ by Michelle Paver. Michael provided this review: ‘A very interesting and detailed book about a boy 2000 BC and his life. The book has its ups and downs, and its good parts and bad parts. During each chapter the author had written some very descriptive text that had lots of hidden meaning’.

Lauren Howe (Catherine McAuley, Westmead) won an iPad Mini by reading ‘Briar Rose’ by Jane Yolen. Lauren shared her review of ‘Briar Rose’: ‘I loved this book, because it gave me a fiction story based on historical events, and was able to pull me in and have me reading the book at all times to find out what was going to happen. It's written really well, and the information is accurate as well’.
Greg said it was terrific to see so many students take part in the challenge and pick up books over the summer.
‘I enjoyed reading over the break and it’s so great to see students sharing my passion for the written word,’ Greg said.
