Year 8 Japanese Cooking Lessons

“There's no better way to immerse yourself in a country than to eat its food.”

In Week 6, Year 8 took part in a fun and educational Japanese cooking lesson run by the Year 10 Japanese class. The students prepared a Japanese dish called yakisoba - a very popular, quick and easy meal, which consists of fried noodles, vegetables and meat, served with a thick and slightly sweet sauce.

The Year 10 students took turns cooking the yakisoba over a hot barbeque and teaching the Year 8 students Japanese table manners and etiquette, including how to start and end a meal in Japanese and how to use chopsticks. While learning to eat using chopsticks proved to be a challenge for some students at first, they did manage to master the skill, just in time to taste the yakisoba – which was delicious!

The lessons also gave Year 8 students the opportunity to ask the Year 10 students any questions they had about studying Japanese.

Overall, all the students had a great time learning about Japanese cuisine and etiquette, with some saying the lessons have influenced them to choose Japanese as an elective in Years 9 and 10.
