The VETiS (VET in Schools) Competition projects are aligned with National Training Packages and provides an opportunity for students to showcase the knowledge and skills they have learnt in the first year of a VET course and to test their skills against those of their peers.
After local school competitions and a selection process, the teacher nominated participants embarked on the 2015 process of regional, zone and state rounds of competition between Catholic Education, Department of Education and the Independent Sector schools.
In all, students presented in 10 different courses, including; Tourism, Hairdressing, Commercial Cookery, Food and Beverage, Business Services, Entertainment, Construction, IDT, Automotive and Retail.
The 2015 VETiS Worldskills competition event ran over a four-week period at various locations across Sydney, with 150 students competing from the three sectors in the Sydney and western Sydney regions.
Of the 28 students that represented the Parramatta Diocese, the first and second place winners at the zone level will move onto the National completion to be held in October 2016. Parramatta Diocese successes include:
Vocational Education Officer Veronica Niessen said Worldskills is a competition, which can be likened to an Olympic competition for ‘Tradies’.
‘The VETiS Competition starts at a local level with regional competitions and concluding in 2016 with a national competition,’ Veronica said. ‘Congratulations and thank you to all the participants and their teachers, who helped to prepare and mentor the students for the competition.’
