The Berg Shield is a cricket competition for Years 7 to 10 and includes schools from all around NSW.
On Monday, October 24, a squad of 14 players made their way to Parker Street Penrith for our first game. The squad was: Aman Jaswal (captain), Anmol Singh, Hitik Ahuja, Shikhar Goyal, Sehajdeep Singh, Parminder Narain, Luke Ward, Ronit Raman, Josh Garland, Siaosi Tuita, Leleianoa Auva’a Ebony O’Connor, Nicholas Mathias and Preet Sahai. We were to play St Dominics’s of Penrith, who won the competition last year.
We could tell early in the game that we were up against a very strong side. We were ably captained by Aman and he and Luke each managed to take a wicket. However, St Dominic’s fought back with some spectacular batting, finally posting a score in excess of 10 runs an over.
In reply, we batted with determination, but were not able to score at anywhere near the rate of St Dominic’s. At all times the St Andrews College team members supported and encouraged each other, despite being clearly outclassed.
I would like to thank Mr Gillogly for his support and driving us to and from the venue and Anhad Singh-Ghuman and Danial Afzal for scoring and their encouragement of the team.
Finally, I was proud to be associated with the St Andrews College team members, who each made a great effort and played the game in the right spirit.Phillip McBride
